Lowkey Hi-Q & Why
Lowkey Hi-Q are toxic-free, plant-based hair and skin care products developed by Texas barber Lori J. Lozano.
In April 2019, well into her fourth year of barbering Lori became aware, through doctors visits and testing, of a benign tumor on her uterus which had been setting off dangerously severe anemia, affecting her energy, mood, and ability to show up to work consistently.
This was big news since she considered herself healthy and strong with a good work ethic. This news did coincided with the consistent feeling of exhaustion. Her health was now front and center. In response Lozano slowed everything down to reduce stress and bring herself into balance which included extending appointments to longer booking time slots, taking less customers per day, and prioritized lunch and rest.
The first and easiest change was implementing a plant-based diet. Simultaneously, she switched shampoos, soaps, and detergents at home for one’s with less or no harsh chemicals. L’s perspective at the barbershop changed when at the back bar reading labels, which was a challenge because there were no options for replacing the talc, or the fragrance-filled pomades, shave gels, and aftershaves which went with the services she provided.
“It was pretty shocking reading labels and seeing all the toxic ingredients in every one of my favorite products and brands. Also, they were all in plastic containers which was one of the things I was supposed to reduce. Plastic use. I was surprised I hadn’t realized it before. I read food labels all the time. I considered myself environmentally aware. When it came to my work with barbering I was short-sided. My focus was more about how sharp the cut and design came out; The photo afterwards; The look on social media; Anywhere else but the products toxicity.”
Lori created a plant-based, toxic-free option in glass containers that replaced most back bar items she needed the most; She made sure the ingredient list was short, understandable and recognizable. She spent the next year using and perfecting the aftershave, shave gel, and dust she had developed. Her customers and fellow barbers gave feedback for the products’ feel and aroma as well.
At customers’ requests she developed a Butter for beard moisturizing and an aerosol-free Clipper Disinfectant Spray when prompted by a few Houston barbers.
Now two years later the result is an effective line-up of plant-based essentials specially crafted with barbers in mind.
